Looking back on a year that kept moviegoers hopping

In one of his famous stand-up bits, comedian George Carlin observed that every driver who goes faster than you is a maniac, while everyone going slower than you is an idiot. Similarly, film critics who put movies you like on their top 10 lists are geniuses, and the ones who don’t are morons. Nonetheless, we critics go on writing them anyway.

I Am Batman…The Trailer

December 14th, 2007 by dingdans

From YEEEAH — Thanks to one talent of a cellphone videographer, YEEEAH brings you the new Batman trailer. See it before it gets taken offline, after the jump!

The trailer for the new Batman flick “Dark Knight” has been leaked online, and as of 12:31 EST Warner Brothers hasn’t yanked it from the Daily Zoom, so knock yourselves out. It’s kinda hard to tell exactly what’s going on in the trailer — what with the no sound and bootleg quality and all — but my reporter’s instinct leads me to believe that a lot of shit is blowing up and that also, Batman has a pretty kick-ass bike. My instincts also indicate that Heath Ledger’s Joker must have been in the middle of spirited bout of “World of Warcraft” or maybe reading aloud some of the free verse from his journal when his mom forbade him from going to the Fall Out Boy concert that night. And thus is born one of the most notorious superhero villains in history. Rated PG-13 for violence, language, and overt gayness.

‘Alvin and the Chipmunks’ feels dated, stale

Are singing chipmunks really so different from Britney Spears?

In “Alvin and the Chipmunks,” our furry, little singing friends have been turned into something like tiny Justin Timberlakes. They use phrases like “sup playa,” perform with Madonna-style headset microphones and even suffer from that chronic tour-canceler: “exhaustion.”

No, they don’t enter rehab, run over paparazzi or suddenly shave off all their hair. But here, Alvin, Simon and Theodore are young pop stars, beholden to their songwriters and susceptible to the whims of label management.

Synopsis

Growing keenly aware of the changing religious and political tides of late 16th century Europe, Queen Elizabeth finds her rule openly challenged by the Spanish King Philip II — with his powerful army and sea-dominating armada — determined to restore England to Catholicism.

Preparing to go to war to defend her empire, Elizabeth struggles to balance ancient royal duties with an unexpected vulnerability in her love for Sir Walter Raleigh. But he remains forbidden for a queen who has sworn body and soul to her country.

Unable and unwilling to pursue her love, Elizabeth encourages her favorite lady-in-waiting, Bess, to befriend Raleigh to keep him near. But this strategy forces Elizabeth to observe their growing intimacy. As she charts her course abroad, her trusted advisor, Sir Francis Walsingham, continues his masterful puppetry of Elizabeth’s court at home — and her campaign to solidify absolute power. Through an intricate spy network, Walsingham uncovers an assassination plot that could topple the throne. But as he unmasks traitors that may include Elizabeth’s own cousin Mary Stuart, he unknowingly sets England up for destruction.
